My original prints often focus on intaglio processes.
The rich range of textural effects available through collagraph and etching
fascinate me. My
elements
of nature prints find their inspiration in the natural environment.
For these I often use organic materials which, I feel, mirror the contrasting
fragility yet powerful forces of nature. I hope they give my prints the
same delicate detail and strength. I also combine intaglio processes with
other forms of printmaking such as digital and stencil, as well as chine
colle. The
myth and magic
themed prints often grow from intuitive ideas which can only be fully
realised once I have found the right combination of processes. My interest
in relief printmaking processes, such as linocut, has led the exploration
of more figurative imagery in my work. The narrative content of
tales
and legends and
miniature
prints develops from a combination of observation and imagination
and from the inspiration of living in Wales. I find working on a small
scale is a challenging change to my usual practice. The need for precision
and detail is greater than ever, and in striving for this, new images
and ideas present themselves. My
collages
enable me to integrate different types of printing substrates into one
work. The printing base can be paper, parchment, even leather or clay,
in fact any material which will receive a print or impression, in the
broadest sense of the term. I often incorporate 3 dimensional print fragments
into these works. My aim is to make these different elements combine into
one unique and satisfying work.
